if the railway is not built

Where's our Railway is a community group campaigning for the construction of the Petrie to Kippa Ring Railway. The area surrounding the railway route is experiencing and will continue to experience rapid population growth. It is one of the fastest growing areas in Queensland. With roads becoming increasingly congested the railway is more necessary than ever.

A four year study by GHD consultants concluded that the railway should be built and that it was very economically viable. This assessment was based on nationally and internationally recognised standards. Despite this, Queensland Transport has recommended to the minister that the railway should not be built, producing an assessment that is directly contrary to the GHD report. Queensland Transport claims that the material they based their assessment on is commercial in confidence and therefore secret. If you had the choice between a publicly conducted open study to recognised standards and one based on secrecy which would you choose? Transport Minister Paul Lucas has supported the assessment based on secret material.

Queensland Transport constinues to support the concept of a busway in the rail corridor despite this being only 1/60th as economically viable as a railway and certain to be a loss making exercise, capable of moving less than half as many passengers while costing as much or more than a railway.

The railway has been promised by several governments and never delivered. The idea for the railway was originally suggested in 1896. Waiting a century is long enough.

There are no valid planning, economic or technical reasons why the Petrie to Kippa Ring Railway should not be built.

There are no valid reasons that the benefits of the railway should be witheld for the residents and future residents between Petrie and Redcliffe.

The Beattie Government is building other railways such as the Robina to Coolangatta line and the Darra to Springfield Line. There has been no public study of the viability of the Springfield line yet somehow this project is preferred ahead of the Petrie to Kippa Ring Line. The difference between those areas and ours is that they do not have all the seats occupied by safe ALP state members. This community is paying the price of loyalty.

Last financial year the Beattie Government had a budget surplus of $1 Billion and this budget they are projecting a budget surplus of $2.7 billion. They have the money to build this railway.

Only dubious advice and politics stands between this community and the facility they need and deserve. Join with Where's Our Railway to put common sense ahead of politics. Click on the act now button to see what you can do to help get our railway.

We welcome support from any quarter, be it members of the community, business, politicians or members of any political party, community groups and clubs. Building the railway is essential to the future of this area and PLAIN COMMON SENSE.
