A Guide to Writing to Politicians about the Petrie to Kippa Ring Railway
When writing to politicians it is important that it does not come across as a form letter that you have simply signed. A personal letter from you will get a personal response and their answers to your different questions can often provide new information for the campaign. For this reason we won't provide an actual letter but give you points that you can put in your own words.
- Make sure that you address the letter properly. Addresses for relevant State Politicians can be found here. Make sure that you put the date on.
- Put a heading on the letter eg Concerns at failure to proceed with the Petrie to Kippa Ring Railway
- Tell them about your disappointment that the government has not decided to build the railway.
- Tell them how you think the decision will affect you and your family. eg that it is very difficult for you to get to work without using a car. That it is almost impossible to get a seat on a train at Petrie at peak hour etc .
- Tell them how you think the decision not to build the railway will affect your community. eg Anzac Aveue will become overloaded , social and work opportunities are less available due to lack of adequate public transport etc
- Tell them how you think the decision not to build the railway will affect larger areas and other transport facilities eg congestion on the Bruce Highway
- Tell them that this issue will have great influence on how you vote at the next election
- Ask them some specific questions. These might be about whether they support the railway or about some specific aspect of the project such as why does the government prefer a busway as shown in the Translink Documents. Check out our resources page to educate yourself on the issue and to find particular aspects that you want to ask questions about.
- Make sure that you put your name and address on the letter.
- About a week or 10 days after you send the letter you should receive a letter acknowledging receipt of your letter. This may also say that the politician has passsed your concerns on to someone else for a response.
- If you have not received a reply about a month after you sent the letter, send another letter asking why you have not received an answer. Always include a copy of your original letter so that they can not say they can't answer it because they can't find it.Keep doing this every month until you get a full answer.
- When you receive an answer from the politician in question, read it carefully to ensure that they have actually answered your questions. If they have not answered it, write back to them asking why they have not answered them. Restate your questions and ask for an answer.
- We would appreciate a copy of your letters and any reply you receive. Please mail, fax or email them to us. Our details are on our contact page.
