State Election 2006

Terry Shaw Organiser of Where's Our Railway to Run for Murrumba

Terry Shaw, Organiser of "Where's Our Railway?", who previously contested the Redcliffe By- Election, will contest the State seat of Murrumba as an independent at the September 9 State Election.

Mr. Shaw said "I would have run for Redcliffe again but the train only goes to Petrie."

"Seriously though, it seems the Beattie Government has not heeded the warning from the Redcliffe by-election where they lost the seat and enough people voted for the Petrie to Kippa-Ring railway issue to change the seat. In any case, I believe that the member for Redcliffe , Mr Rogers is personally committed to getting the railway"

"Transport Minister Paul Lucas has presented a dubious plan, that suggests that the Government would build both a busway and eventually a railway. Common sense says that is unlikely. The government will be creating another Logan City if they proceed with their current transport plans. Unfortunately, the member for Murrumba, Mr. Dean Wells, has chosen to support that plan."

"Mr Wells has to make up his mind whether he is representing the people of Murrumba in Parliament, or he is the representative of Team Beattie to the people of Murrumba. As long as the government keeps fudging on this issue and he supports it, he is just representing Team Beattie. "

"The light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train Mr. Wells" Mr. Shaw quipped

"Where's Our Railway?" met with the Transport Minister Mr. Lucas in October 2005 and put a number of simple questions with regard to the decision to build a busway instead of a railway. After 10 months the Minister has still not answered a single one of those questions. Mr. Shaw said " At the community cabinet the Minister said that he wanted to be honest with us. It speaks volumes that he hasn't answered a single one of the questions."

He continued " One has to ask why they won't answer these questions. I think there are three possible reasons. The first possibility is incompetence, which since it is a government you can never rule out. The second possibility is politics, because the Beattie government has become so arrogant that they think they can continue to get away with fobbing off the electorate despite the massive growth here. The third possibility is corruption, and we all know there hasn't been any corruption in Queensland since the Fitzgerald Inquiry."

No decision has been made with regard to preferences. That decision will be made based on the position of the major parties that becomes clear in the course of the election. Mr. Shaw said "The Liberals have said they will immediately start the design for the railway. I'd prefer a commitment to start construction by 2007 or 2008. Besides that commitment was made when Bob Quinn was leader so it could be a whole new ball game now. Lawrence Springborg has yet to clarify his support for the railway too."
